This month we are spotlighting Matt Connell Wines.
Matt Connell and his wife Beth have been involved in the wine industry since 2000 and Matt Connell Wines is a culmination of the experience gained throughout their lives. Established in time for Vintage 2016, Matt Connell Wines was born from a desire to find, and work with, parcels of fruit that they believe are incredibly special to Central Otago and that could develop into the wines that they love to drink themselves. Their wines are different by design and showcase special growers, sites and stories and exude richness of flavour, complexity, and balance.
Rendition Pinot Noir $16/75
The Rendition Pinot Noir 2023 is richly fruited with seductive complexity. It is fermented in small individual lots using wild and inoculated yeast then matured in French Oak for 10 months before being blended and bottled. The wine shows dark plum, dried herb, game and roasted nut aromas with a hint of mushroom. The concentrated palate offers succulent fruit flavours with plush texture backed by beautifully melded tannins, finishing impressively long and soothing. A splendid expression combining fruit richness with spicy/savoury undertones.
Chardonnay $16/70
The chardonnay is styled on the chardonnay of “Chablis” in France and is barrel fermented with a low percentage of new oak. Gorgeously styled and expressed, the bouquet shows golden peach, rockmelon, vanilla and almond meal notes, leading to a richly textured palate offering terrific concentration and length. Wonderfully structured by creamy mouthfeel and juicy acidity, making it hugely appealing.
